Mount XLR is a master at sculpting samples and sounds in a way that makes his music feel 3D — a throbbing entity, gritty and alive. There is a constant sense of tension and release, both within individual tracks and across the EP as a whole: from the ambient intro, through faster BPMs, to a moment of introspection in the collaboration with UK artist Tommy Barlow, culminating in the outro which perfectly encapsulates the two sides of the record. The EP flows with the precision of a DJ set, its transitions sharp and precise.
Deeply influenced by UK music — especially bass, post-dubstep, and garage — the EP feels both like a nod to the sounds of a decade ago and a contemporary response to them. At the same time, it draws from harder, punchier textures favoured in Seoul’s current underground scene.
