1993, Scottish ambient techno classic ‘Mindweeds’, originally released on Pure-affiliated T&B Vinyl, is finally getting a long-overdue reissue.
With a Discogs demand ratio of around 300 have to 2,000 want, and second-hand copies fetching upwards of £100, now seems like the perfect time to bring it back.
T&B Vinyl was a Pure-affiliated label run by Keith McIvor (aka JD Twitch) and Andy Watson (Brainstorm).
State of Flux were Roger Elliott and Dave Clark, also known as Sparky, LUMA and Truffle Club, with Dave being the main man behind Kübler-Ross.
The pair first met at Glasgow’s Strathclyde University in 1990, bonding over a shared love of weasel racing, German sausages and “man-duos” like The KLF and The Shamen.
Dave was fully pubescent and already had a synth and drum machine, while Roger – a late developer – bought “another cheap synth, a Commodore Amiga for sequencing and a tiny mixer with no EQ”.
For the next two long years, they devoted themselves to “churning out unlistenable pish”, admittedly without the faintest idea of what they were trying to achieve.
Then, out of nowhere, in the summer of 1992, a flatmate’s spoken-word CD by Jello Biafra, ‘I Blow Minds For A Living’, provided the inspiration that would unlock the spark of dynamite and set the raving world on fire.
Sampled using a Walkman and cassette tape on playback (a decision the pair would soon come to regret every time the track was performed live), Jello’s pilfered rant would become the crucial glue holding together the burgeoning kaleidoscopic helicopter spliff that is ‘Mindweeds’.
